Mads, Alex & their SLSC Soiree
The Brief
Sentimental. Silly. Sandy.
The Meetcute
It was 2014 when single Alex embarked on the MacAlpine trip, Macquarie University’s infamous annual ski trip. MacAlpine was sought out by many University students in need of 10 days of drinking from ski boots dusted with a few runs on Queenstown’s infamous slopes. So much in demand that students who didn’t make the list would fly to Queenstown at the same time and follow the MacAlpine group like a bunch of groupies. Enter, single Mads.
Now apparently Alex and Mads had had run-ins prior to MacAlpine at 2 x NYE parties and a 21st, however when asked to recall Mads could hardly remember. Was she treating Alex mean and keeping him keen? Maybe. It wouldn’t be until one chilly night in Queenstown, snow flakes afalling - when Alex’s group of MacAlpine friends turned up at the hotel that Madi and her friends were staying at for some drinks one evening….Bar Alex.
When Madi casually asked the group “Where’s Alex?” Alex’s friend John [here today] jumped a the opportunity to start the rumour / chant “Madi loves Alex, Madi loves Alex”.
They progressed to the nightclub, where the drinks were flowing, music pumping - beanies were flying off as the dance floor kicked into gear. When all of a sudden Madi would catch a movement in her peripheral. Time would stop, music would warp, crowd split into two - spotting THE Alex cutting shapes as the kids call it on top of a table. Goosebumps a’risin on Madi’s arms, she figured she may as well act on said rumour and I quote her “I was like a tiger with a gazelle, getting ready to pounce on her prey”. She would pull Alex off the table and INSIST she buy this stallion a vodka lemonade. She had no money so she borrowed her friend Justin’s [here today] debit card to buy Alex a drink and before they knew it they were sharing their first pash in the stairwell of the club.
What we did
The weather was not in our bedamned favour but THAT’S OKAY, because we had a fabulous plan B inside the Toowoon Bay Surf Club, right on the beach. Before Mads walked down the aisle I introduced and hit play on a song performed by Harry, Madi’s Grandpa. Harry and his wife Della, known as Oma and Opa, are both professional violinists and the snippet is a piece entitled “Romance”. I spoke for about 8 minutes about their love story integrating a handful of guests, until we rolled into key elements such as the legal and personal vows, a ring exchange, and of course our paperwork - signed leaning on their witnesses backs. I pronounced them as husband and wife just before sealing the deal with a kiss. Donezo! Get these two drink.
